報告題目:Beyond Computation: Enhancing Mathematical Thinking with Generative AI(用生成式AI促進數學思維)
報告摘要:Generative AI (GenAI) is reshaping mathematics education by providing personalized learning pathways, automating instructional content creation, and enhancing teaching effectiveness. This presentation critically examines how structured integration of GenAI into mathematics education—guided by rigorous research, innovation, and practical classroom applications—can foster deeper mathematical thinking. Four primary considerations are highlighted: the cognitive similarities between AI and human problem-solving processes, the capacity of AI to surpass human proficiency in specific mathematical tasks, challenges involved in aligning AI methods with robust pedagogical practices, and the importance of deliberate AI implementation to ensure authentic mathematical understanding.While GenAI offers promising opportunities for increased student accessibility, instructional efficiency, and learner engagement, it also raises significant ethical and educational concerns. These include risks of diminished critical thinking skills, algorithmic biases, and potential over-dependence on automated reasoning. This session directly addresses common misconceptions about AI’s role in mathematical education and defines essential educator competencies necessary for effectively managing AI-driven classrooms. By carefully balancing innovation and ethical considerations, the objective is to position GenAI as a supportive tool that enriches, rather than substitutes, human mathematical instruction and learning.The talk concludes by illustrating these principles through four practical case studies, specifically highlighting GenAI applications designed to enhance mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills.

報告人簡介:胡祥恩教授現為香港理工大學學習科學與技術系講座教授,并擔任該校高等教育研究與發展院院長。他的研究涉及心理學、電子與計算機工程等多個跨學科領域,着重于人類認知行為的數學建模、人工智能技術、計算機輔助教學系統以及分布式學習技術的開發與應用。在加入香港理工大學之前,胡教授曾在美國孟菲斯大學任教長達30年,擔任心理學系、電氣與計算機工程系以及計算機科學系教授,并在該校智能系統研究所擔任高級研究員。同時,他領導了孟菲斯大學的高級分布式學習實驗室。此外,他也曾擔任華中師範大學心理學院院長及教授。胡教授的研究獲得了國際多個知名科研機構的廣泛認可和資助。他作為首席研究員主持的科研項目累計資助額超過1000萬美元,作為合作研究員參與的項目資金則超過3000萬美元。他積極推動學術交流與合作,深入探讨生成式人工智能在教育領域的應用及面臨的挑戰。胡教授還提出了創新的“蘇格拉底式學習遊樂場”(Socratic Playground for Learning,SPL)概念,緻力于通過情景式的學習環境,促進學習者深層次的推理與人機互動。他尤其強調在教育領域平衡人類智慧與人工智能的重要性,提出人工智能應作為人類互動的有益補充,而非替代。胡祥恩教授于1978年至1987年在我校數理學院攻讀本科及碩士學位(應用數學專業)和教學,在校期間紮實的數學學習為他未來的跨學科研究奠定了堅實的學術基礎,也為他日後在心理學、電子與計算機工程領域的研究提供了重要支撐。
